Building Operations Weekly

COVID TRAINING DEADLINE WAS AUGUST 7TH: REMINDER TO HAVE ALL STAFF COMPLETE COVID TRAINING

The deadline for COVID training completion was Friday August 7th

Completing this course is mandatory for all UBC and Building Operations staff

It is great to see that we had  665 staff, or 90%, of Building Operations employees complete the course prior to the deadline, however,  we need 100% compliance as this is a mandatory course to be completed to be able to work on campus, as mandated by the university.

Managers will be following up with those directly who have yet to complete COVID training and asking them to complete the course.

We are still available to support staff that require additional help – please send an e-mail to nicolas.banquero@ubc.ca or joey-lee.rebelo@ubc.ca with any questions.

NEW VPFO COMMUNICATIONS & ENGAGEMENT WEBSITE

VPFO Communications & Engagement have created a new website to help you with your communications. Everyone in the VPFO has a part in telling the story of how safety, finance and facilities enable UBC’s teaching, learning and research. On the new Communications & Engagement website, you will find information, resources, and tools to do your part to strengthen your communications and achieve your business goals.

REMEMBER TO SUBMIT YOUR BRIGHT IDEAS!

We know the last few months have been filled with COVID information and adapting to new changes, both in the workplace and at home and you may not have had time to present your Bright Ideas.

Now that we are back in the workplace and adjusting to new norms, it would be great to get your input on operational efficiencies as well as any new and fresh ideas you have to share with the department. A Bright Idea submission can also lead to winning one of our five staff awards at the end of the year!

Building Operations Bright Ideas: We want to hear from you!

Everyone in Building Operations is encouraged to submit their Bright Ideas that contribute to the success of our five strategic priorities:

  • Employee Engagement
  • Leadership Development
  • Asset Stewardship
  • Innovation
  • Customer Experience

Please visit https://buildingoperations.ubc.ca/staff/bright-ideas/ to learn more and submit your Bright Idea.  If your Bright Idea is selected, you will be contacted and possibly asked for a follow up meeting to further expand on your idea.

NAVIGATING DISCLOSURE: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Sometimes a health problem can make it harder to get the job done. This could be a sprained ankle, bad back, or chronic migraines. It could also be a mental illness like depression or an anxiety disorder. In Canada, telling your employer about any kind of health condition that affects your ability to work is called disclosure

When a mental health problem or illness is getting in the way of you doing your job, it can be difficult to decide if disclosing it to your employer is the best option. Many employees have questions or fears: What do I say? What if they think I can’t do my work? Will people treat me differently? What if I lose my job?

Disclosing a mental illness to your employer is a personal decision. It can be complex and should be made with care. For more information about things you should know if you’re experiencing symptoms of a mental illness at work and deciding whether or not to tell your employer, check out the Canadian Mental Health Association resource below.

REMINDER: DO NOT LET UNAUTHORIZED VISITORS INTO USB

We have had a couple incidents over the last two weeks where unauthorized visitors that do not work for UBC, or are contracted out by UBC, have been let into USB by one of our staff.

A reminder to please be diligent about who you are providing USB access to.  If the person cannot provide a valid UBC ID or a business card proving they are a known contractor that frequents USB, do not let them into the building.

Weekly Tip: Know the Risk

Knowing the potential disasters and hazards that exist in your area are an important part of emergency preparedness, and will help you properly prepare. Earthquakes and wildfires are the first that come to mind, but many others can affect us.

For a complete list if the natural risks and other hazards in BC, visit Government of Canada’s Get Prepared website at https://www.getprepared.gc.ca/cnt/hzd/rgnl/bc-en.aspx
