STAFF ENGAGEMENT PLAN

Signing up for Canvas

Canvas is UBC’s Learning Management System. This is a new platform which holds all of UBC’s mandatory and elective courses. When you complete training on Canvas, it is tracked for you.

Canvas will be integrated with Workday so that all your UBC training, including safety training, is tracked in one place. You will be able to check yourself to ensure that all your training is up to date.

All UBC staff members must log into Canvas at least once so that training administrators can add you to courses in future.

Go to https://login.cpe.ubc.ca/ and Login with your CWL and password (full instructions included in the how to guide provided by your Head/Manager)

PLANT SALE – UNITED WAY FUNDRAISER

Soft Landscape orders summer annual plants in the preceding winter. In light of limitations on the Soft Landscape crew brought on by responses to COVID-19, not all summer annuals can be planted this summer. The supplier was unable to take a return on the plant order so we will be giving away excess plants for a donation to United Way.

The Fundraiser will be overseen by Soft Landscape and held over three days May 21st, 22nd, and 25th from 11:30-5:00 in the Building Operations Nursery (6029 Nurseries Rd).

To ensure adequate physical distancing the following rules will be in place

  • Limiting number of people looking at plants at a time
  • Plants will be offered by the tray, there will be no substitutions.
  • The minimum donation for a flat of plants will be $10 cash, no change will be given

ORDERING CRITICAL PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE)

The University’s supplier partners are currently experiencing supply chain constraints due to the coronavirus (COVID-19).  As a result, UBC is experiencing delays in receiving orders, and challenges in being able to secure critical goods and services, such as PPE (nitrile gloves, face shields, N95 and surgical masks, hand sanitizer, disinfectant wipes, etc.). The Critical Supply team is actively working to improve the situation by:

  • Working with UBC’s regular suppliers to plan and coordinate orders, and manage backorders,
  • Identifying new sources of supply for PPE,
  • Exploring alternative products, where appropriate.

What this means for you:

‘The USB Stores Front Counter will no longer provide select PPE on the Critical Supply List (disposal gloves, face protection, respirators) on a ‘walk up’ basis – you will need to place an order through your supervisor and ready.ubc@ubc.ca.’

Plan for a 24 hour turnaround time to prepare your order.

To Place Your Order for PPE on the Critical Supply List:

  1. Complete the Hygiene Assessment Form and submit it to your supervisor or head (form will be provided).
  2. Supervisors will review and confirm the PPE needed with their local SRS resource.
  3. Supervisors will submit the form (along with applicable SWPs) to ready.ubc.ca.
  4. Hygienists working with the Critical Supply Team will review the request, contacting supervisors as needed to find reasonable alternatives where the PPE selected is in short supply.
  5. Upon approval, your supervisor and USB Stores will receive an email confirmation that includes all pick up details.

If you require assistance, or have questions, please contact SRS at ready.ubc@ubc.ca

Critical Supply PPE List Applicable to Facilities:

  • Disposable Gloves
  • Face Protection
  • Respirators, including N95s, half-masks & cartridges

Re-usable items, like goggles, face shields and half-mask respirators should be kept in good condition and sanitized/cleaned after shifts and breaks to prolong their useful life.

For PPE not on the Critical Supply list, e.g. hard hats, heavy duty work gloves, it is business as usual.

If you require assistance, or have questions, please contact SRS at ready.ubc@ubc.ca

NON-MEDICAL MASKS AND FACE COVERINGS AND THE RISKS ASSOCIATED WITH THEM

Many people are donning non-medical masks in an attempt to protect themselves from infection by COVID-19. However there is little scientific evidence to suggest that doing so offers the wearer any additional protection, and could in fact endanger them further if not used in a safe manner.

Non-medical masks are not Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and cannot be considered as part of workplace safety planning.

For information about UBC’s stance on PPE, visit srs.ubc.ca/covid19.

Departments or units that choose to provide non-medical masks or face coverings to UBC Members (faculty, staff or students) must inform the recipients of the risks and limitations of non-medical mask usage.

Following the guidance of the BC Centre for Disease Control, UBC has put effective measures in place to reduce the risk of infection, such as:

  • Physical distancing wherever feasible including scheduling workers to allow for physical distancing (Elimination)
  • Physical barriers where feasible, eg. point of service at food outlets (Engineering controls)
  • Maximizing remote working arrangements and controlling occupancy (Administrative Control)
  • Face Shields and Respirators where appropriate (Personal Protective Equipment)

DO YOU KNOW WHERE YOUR GAS METER IS LOCATED IN CASE OF AN EARTHQUAKE?

TIP: Make sure to keep a wrench close to your gas meter. This way you are always ready to shut off the gas in an emergency. Once the gas is off, do not turn it back on. Only a registered gas contractor can do that safely.
