New Aquatic Centre opens January 23

Demonstrations at the new Aquatic Centre are happening this week and next week. Handover to Building Operations will happen once the demos are done and we are confident in the operations of the systems. Note that media are being invited to tour the new facility tomorrow, January 18 at 10 a.m.

No planned noise/building maintenance in Life Sciences Centre on February 3-5

On February 3-5, please note that there are important undergraduate interviews taking place at the LSC on the ground floor. Noise issues are grounds for applicant appeals.

Therefore, no planned loud noise (jack hammers, pounding, electrical outages, alarm system testing, etc.) and no construction. All planned building maintenance should be scheduled outside of interview event. No building maintenance on main floor of building for duration of event (painting, etc.).

VACATION ENTITLEMENTS FOR 2017 ARE DONE

Vacation calendars were completed on Friday, January 13 and were either posted in your shops or were placed in mail boxes for pick up. Each vacation calendar includes employee names in seniority order and their vacation balances in hours and in days.

A couple of notes:

  • For employees on a flex schedule, the number of days given is the number of vacation days the employee can take (flex days off are not included). Check the flex schedule to determine whether or not a week’s vacation will be 4 or 5 days.
  • IUOE 882 employees who joined Building Operations after 2013 are now receiving their annual vacation entitlement on the anniversary of their hire date (as per the IUOE 882 Collective Agreement), rather than on January 1. These have been noted on their respective calendars.

Thanks to Z-Day staff for keeping our campus safe and functional over the holidays

Thanks to the Z-Day staff who went above and beyond those days to ensure the campus was safe and functional.

Custodial was here with a skeleton crew to continue servicing of to key spaces and client groups that were active over the break. Skeleton crews for Electricians, FLS, Elevators, Steamfitters & Plumbers also worked hard to respond to campus calls.

Due to this year’s relentless winter Municipal crews were out every single day (except for Christmas) to ensure campus priorities routes were as clear of snow and ice  as and passable as possible.

Kudos to the crews and also to those who stayed late and went above and beyond to get our assets up and running instead of waiting for the new year to attend them.  Here are just a few examples:

  • Electricians returned service to multiple out-of-service Emergency Blue Light Stations.
  • A flooded High Voltage Electrical Duct might have been left for a full crew to handle in the new year – but the E&W Plumber stayed after hours to pump out the water in the manhole and we were able to remedy the situation that evening.
  • One of Bio West’s Chromalox boilers were locked out by All-Pro before the holiday season however a contractor was scheduled to fix the boiler. Instead of pushing the work to the new year, our Chief Engineer called All-Pro and got permission to remove their locks, got the contractor to place their locks on the equipment and our crew stayed to complete the work that day.
  • Coming up on New Year’s Eve, plumbers and electricians came in for 12- hour day and night shifts to provide 24-hr fire watch support while a fire alarm control panel upgrade project was completed.
  • And right at the end of the day on Friday, January 30th, a trouble call came in for a leak. Our plumber stepped up not only to isolate the leak but also stayed late to repair and put the system back into service.

Canucks tickets available

We have a pair of lower bowl tickets for this Friday’s game against Florida. You know you want to help Luongo feel welcome! Contact Denise Tang to be entered in the draw before end of day Wednesday.
