Building Operations Town Hall Is on Wednesday, May 8

A reminder that the Road to Gold, a Building Operations event, is next week on Wednesday, May 8th from 1:00- 3:00pm at the Old Auditorium building. We have invited a keynote speaker, Mr. Adam Kreek who is an Olympic multi Gold medal recipient and a top consultant in assisting corporations and governments in developing high performance teams by providing strategies and skills for the workforce to adopt. Adam will address safety in the work place throughout his talk. As an athlete, he has to manage repetitive motion stress on his body on his journey to success and this is an opportunity to learn from one of the best. He also was part of a successful team and Adam will share some of the stories on how well the team functioned and how they were able to get through some of their challenges.

Greg Scott, Building Operations’ Managing Director will also provide insight into how we are performing as a department, where we can make improvements, and where the department is heading moving into the 2020. There will also be an opportunity for you to ask any questions you may have.

This is an opportunity for you to connect with other Building Operations staff and we look forward to seeing you there.

Use Best Bike Lock to Prevent Bike Theft

With summer fast approaching, the Vancouver campus becomes a great location for thieves. One item they are interested in are bikes. Keep your bikes secured by using proper locks. Consider the weight and material when buying bike locks. The most effective style of bicycle lock is a U-lock or a D-lock. These locks are made from material that is virtually unbreakable.

Procurement Replacement of Weber Contract in Progress…

There has been a significant update to our current contract with Weber. Effective now, Weber is no longer supporting our plumbing requirements. What does that mean? It means that in the interim, we are purchasing directly from Andrew Sheret for our plumbing needs. Through this transition, we have already seen improvements on our delivery lead times and reduced ordering costs.

We are still proceeding with the RFP for Plumbing and Pipe Fitting supplies. The scope of services were reviewed and approved by Jason Wright and Clayton McMullen. The MRO team is working on finalizing the RFP for issuance in the next week or so.

Next on the schedule is Electrical Supplies. Stores met with Mike Paley, Marcus Drozdzik and Darko Jelic to review a draft scope of services and discuss next steps. The current plan is to finalize our scope and requirements by the middle of May.

Building supplies is our third RFP. We met with Mike Devolin and Kevin Morris to start those discussions. A follow up meeting with the architectural team heads will be scheduled later in May.

Talk a Walk and Check Out the New Pathway at USB North Entry

A concerted effort by the labourers, sheet metal, carpenters and bricklayers resulted in a portion of the entry/pathway being replaced.  During the process, Colin Varner provided guidance on mitigating damage to the root system of the Red Oak.  As a result, metal grates were fabricated to bridge the root system.  The pathway and tree should see another 20+ years of life!
