WEDNESDAY JANUARY 30TH IS SUICIDE AWARENESS DAY AND BELL LET’S TALK

Wednesday, January 30th, 2019 marks UBC’s ninth annual Suicide Awareness Day. It is also Bell’s Let’s Talk day to help end the stigma around mental illness. On this day, and year-round, we encourage everyone help end the stigma that keeps too many who struggle with mental illness from seeking the help the need and to reach out for support if you need it and come together to help save lives. In addition, by wearing orange on January 30th to show your support for those whose lives have been affected by the suicide of friends, family members, or colleagues, and to show that you want to reach out to those who are considering suicide.

PHOENIX CONTROL VALVE DEMONSTRATION

Last week, the Operating Engineers, Mechanical Assistants, Millwrights, and BMS attended a demonstration of Phoenix control valve from one of our suppliers.  Our Building Ops crews were shown how the equipment operates for the mechanical trades.  This (rather small) piece of equipment supplies and exhausts our air systems.  No wonder we have hundreds of these on campus!

The demonstration was very well attended and more importantly, well received.  Thank you to Andrew Porritt for arranging this demonstration.

CUSTODIAL COLLABORATES WITH UBC DEPARTMENT TO MANUFACTURE NEW TOILET PAPER DISPENSER KEYS

Custodial Services recently collaborated with the Physics and Astronomy department to manufacture, using a 3D printer, new toilet paper dispenser keys. This item was proving difficult for our vendor to source prompting us to look elsewhere for a solution.

This problem presented an opportunity for us to use existing technology on campus and to partner up with faculty and staff in another department. This presented us with a novel solution enabling our staff to continue with this key part of their daily routines. Pun intended!

EMMS TEAM MOVES TO COPP

Are you looking for George, Hayley, Deb, Shahid, Evan, Sena, or Ron? These individuals make up part of our EMMS (Enterprise Maintenance Management System) project team.   The team has moved from USB to COPP, their temporary location until we are ready to move them into LMRS.

The move to COPP was necessary for 2 reasons.

  1. This team has a lot of work to accomplish this year so bringing them together in one space was important to help with expediting decision making and communication.
  2. We needed “swing- space” in USB to accommodate the number of renovation projects underway in the Carpentry shop and on the 2nd floor.

So if you are needing to contact anyone on this team their email address and phones have remained the same -they are physically, on a temporary basis at COPP.
