INJURY INCIDENTS ON THE RISE: BE AWARE, USE CAUTION AND SAY SOMETHING IF YOU SEE ANYTHING UNSAFE

We would like to remind ALL staff to watch your footing and avoid being distracted while navigating campus on foot. Based on trends we are seeing in the incident/accident reports, the Building Ops Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committees would like to remind everyone to be extra careful on campus as we enter the Autumn/Fall season. There has been an uptake in the number of incidents where people are slipping and straining themselves on pine cones and tree foliage.

Before you begin any job make sure a hazard assessment has been completed and take those 15 seconds to scan your surroundings and make sure you are comfortable and confident to undertake your work safely.

The last 3 years we have made incredible gains in bringing down our medical and time loss injury incident numbers but we are starting to see an uptick again. We can turn these stats around by taking safety seriously, looking out for one another and reporting all incidents.

LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM STARTING REFRESHER COURSES

The leadership Development Program is entering its second year and all supervisors who took courses last year will now go through the refresher training. These refreshers are designed to build on last year’s learnings and recap some of the key points that you told us were most valuable to you.

Staff who attended last year’s courses are also eligible to attend these refreshers.

A repeat of the original courses is also underway this year. These courses are open to all staff and are considered required for all new supervisors and highly recommended for anyone participating or planning to participate in acting supervisory opportunities in the near future. Get a leg up for that next job posting by including some leadership training in your skill set.
