If you park a UBC Vehicle in UEL regulated areas, you will be towed. review map and rules carefully

All UBC vehicles, including Building Ops fleet, must follow the same parking regulations as the public when parking around the University Endowment Land (UEL). A UBC parking permit is not valid.

Grabbing lunch in the village on your lunch break? You must pay for metered parking and be back on the job in 30 minutes.

Note:

  • If you park at an expired meter, you will be towed.
  • If you park on sidewalks in UEL areas, you will be towed.
  • If you park in a permit only area, you will be towed.

If you park in UEL regulated areas, you have to pay for parking and follow the parking regulations in the same way that the public has to. There are no exceptions to this requirement. If you get towed and you were not there on official UBC business, this will be your cost. If you have any questions, please contact Frank Crudo by email or at 604-827-2105.

Inspection by Zone Trades at ANSO Washroom caught several deficiencies before handover

Zone trades have intimate knowledge of their buildings and are crucial to the maintenance and longevity of UBC’s facilities—and it starts with successfully receiving new assets during the handover process.

On March 10th, our Yellow Zone Plumber Mike Che attended the onsite handover of renewed washrooms at ANSO.  Mike’s inspection caught several deficiencies including faulty mixing valves, missing handles on shut offs, an improperly installed sink, and door latches that can’t be unlocked from outside the stalls. Well done, Mike!

The Project Manager noted these issues and will be working with the Contractor to resolve them.

Hot Water Heat Exchanger Update on RMS website

If you have visited our website today you would have noticed a new easy button that will take you directly to the Risk Management website  at http://rms.ubc.ca/environment/drinkingwater/building-hot-water/ where the issue of the failed heat exchangers is described in detail. Also included on this site is a list of the 56 building complexes where staff from Building Ops and SHHS are doing daily leak detection inspections and Energy and Water staff are doing weekly conductivity testing  – collectively this effort is identifying early signs of failures before they become a water quality problem. Staff have been very effective in their observations as all of the recent failures have been discovered at the very early stages before an internal breach has developed. Without the breach there is no district water transmitted in to the domestic hot water meaning the water continues to meet all applicable guidelines. In each of the mentioned buildings the cold water is not affected and is always the best option for consumption, here at UBC and anywhere.

Thanks to the crews who are working tirelessly to inspect these heat exchangers on a daily basis and escalating all concerning observations immediately. Our diligence and quick action is maintaining our water quality.

Coming soon: Driver Training program keeps our drivers safe

As one of the largest fleet presences on campus, it’s not just our vehicles that get noticed—our driving habits get noticed, too! We must practice and model safe and efficient driving.

While our Driver Training program ensures that new Building Ops drivers are educated in our best practices, one of the issues is the lack of ongoing support for regular drivers; drivers don’t get the opportunity to learn new techniques or even refresh their knowledge.

A refreshed Driver Training program will roll out over the course of this year. The program aims to educate and maintain drivers’ knowledge of safe and efficient techniques on a two-year, recurring basis. Content will be delivered quickly through six easy online training modules.

Look for more information to follow from your managers, heads and the newsletter in the coming weeks.
