Jenniffer Sheel is now the Director, Municipal Services.  Jen’s responsibilities now include; Soft Landscape, Waste Management, Stores, Fleet and Garage, Service contracts and Street and Operational Support (see below).

Under Jen’s leadership, our Municipal division will continue to strive to be the best municipal division of any Canadian university.  Using the 2019-2021 Building Operation’s Strategic Plan as a tool, Jen has developed a work plan that, with continued attention, will meet the department mission to proactively and cost-effectively manage the operations and maintenance of all assets on campus and create enriching and inviting inside and outside spaces.

BOLD CHANGES THEIR NAME TO STREETS AND OPERATIONS SUPPORT

To more suitably represent their roles and how their unit supports UBC across campus, we are pleased to announce that the Building Operations Labour Division (BOLD) has been renamed to Streets and Operations Support.

The new name better reflects the core business functions within the Municipal Services division as follows:

Streets: Asset stewardship of the streets, pathways, perimeter and street drains, sidewalks and other assets in the public realm (for example, water features)

Operations Support:  Supporting project teams, events, moving and other client requests.

EMPLOYEE ENGAGEMENT

THANK YOU TO EVERYONE THAT CONTRIBUTED TO THE SUCCESS OF OUR BUILDING OPERATIONS OPEN HOUSE
A big thank you to everyone who contributed to the success of our Building Operations Open House last Wednesday.  Your efforts were greatly appreciated by Peter, John and the Building Operations team.

During the group tours, we had guests join us from Energy & Water, Infrastructure Development, UBC Studios, the Mailroom and CTLT, it was great to see the engagement and interest in what we do from our USB neighbours.

PROCUREMENT REPLACEMENT AS WEBER CONTRACT COMES TO AN END

As our contract with Weber comes to an end, we have been diligently working on several Request for Proposals to source multiple suppliers to better address our requirements.

To date, we have issued 5 RFPs, and finalized one contract.  Here is the status as each:

  1. Plumbing Supplies – the contract has been awarded to Andrew Sheret and we are well underway with the transition.
  2. Electrical Supplies – the contract has been awarded to Wesco.  Our support team from Wesco will be here to participate in a meet and greet event within the next few weeks.  Stay tuned!
  3. Building Materials -Building operations procurement team is meeting with the trades affected and will approach suppliers to negotiate agreements to support our requirements.
  4. Industrial and Safety Supplies -we have a selected supplier and are in the negotiation process.  We hope to announce the contract next week.
  5. Custodial Supplies – the RFP closed with 7 submissions received.  We are reviewing the proposals and hope to have a contract within the new few weeks.
  6. Chemical Supplies and Service – this RFP is out to market with a lot of interest!  We just completed the Q&A session will potential suppliers.

Each category was developed and reviewed with the affect trades.  We will continue sharing updates as they become available.

NEW SMOKE & VAPE FREE AREA ON UBC CAMPUS

Starting September 2019, we are introducing designated smoke & vape free areas to campus.  In these areas, smoking or vaping of tobacco, cannabis and other vaping products is not permitted.

This is just one way we are supporting the health and wellbeing of our campus communities. Look for signs, like the one below, in these areas.

The area outlined in red on the map shows the smoke & vape free area around the UBC Hospital and health precinct.

PREPARE A BASIC EMERGENCY CAR KIT AND KEEP IT IN YOUR VEHICLE

Emergency car kits are an essential part of our personal emergency preparedness. Whether we are commuting to and from work or going on a family vacation, we spend increasing amounts of time on the road. A good emergency car kit should have the following items:

  • Water and energy bars
  • Flashlight and road flares
  • Booster cables
  • Blanket and extra clothes
  • First aid kit

For a complete emergency car kit list check out Government of Canada’s Get Prepared website at; https://www.getprepared.gc.ca/cnt/kts/cr-kt-en.aspx

THANK YOU TO ALL THE CREWS WHO SUPPORTED IN THE WELCOME BACK STAFF BBQ LAST WEDNESDAY.

The team was terrific! A lot of effort was put into hanging the banners and making sure they were perfectly straight. The furniture was moving like clockwork, the trucks were all in place as planned, the drivers were flexible and helpful when vehicles needed access and the bins were all delivered on time. The electricians were life savers for flagging the issue with the stage and then managing to work with what they had and be as resourceful as possible. The labourers who moved the stage also saved the day. All this would not have been possible without a great team effort!
