When the Heat Is on Be Alert for Signs of Heat Exhaustion

Summer is here and we need to be able to beat the heat. Here are some simple measures that can prevent heat stress:

  • Wear light colored, loose, breathable clothing
  • Drink plenty of cold water to stay hydrated
  • Be alert for signs and symptoms of heat stress
  • Take appropriate rest breaks to cool down

Let’s look out for one another so that we can make sure nobody is adversely effected by the high temperatures this week.

Check Out Updated Project List Posted in the Hallway

The 17/18 routine capital and unplanned renewal project list has been updated and can be found posted in the hallway outside of the wellness centre. Please be sure to stop by and take a look at what renewals are planned within your discipline. We are hopeful that this will help you in three ways:

  1. Assist in making informed decisions should a failure on that equipment happen between now and when it is scheduled to be replaced. We can consider if we should accelerate the planned replacement or look at alternatives to limp us through to a renewal? What we don’t want to do is waste money and resources doing a thorough repair on something that will be replaced. Need help with this decision? Speak to your head.
  2. If a project is still in its early stages and you have comments on what new equipment should be installed, please contact the system owner of your discipline to discuss your ideas.
  3. A column has been included where you can comment on what is required on those projects to allow us to take on the operation of the new piece of equipment. Is there additional training required? Is certain verification or testing required? What else do you need to ensure that new asset comes to us as smoothly as possible? Please write your comments in the column provided and discuss with the technical specialist in your area.

Do Not Block Loading Bay or Park in No Parking/Fire Lance Zone on Sauder Lane

Ensure that you read and obey the posted signs in and around the Henry Angus north end loading bay behind the White Spot restaurant. If you are working for Food Services, you are able to park in the loading zone, but check in the kitchen staff as we don’t want to block their loading zone when Food Services is expecting a food delivery. You are not permitted to park in any fire lane in this area.

MED C Asbestos Abatement Underway To Prepare for Flooring Replacement

As part of this year’s annual routine capital renewals Med C is receiving new flooring and main entrance door. This was prioritized based on advice of Building Ops trades and the UBC locksmiths.

The flooring replacement in the Medical Sciences Building Block C is scheduled to begin Wednesday, August 2, 2017 at 5PM and should be done by September. The corridor and entry areas will receive new flooring to the basement level, first, second, third and fourth floor. This work will be conducted in two stages, and in the evenings to minimize impact to building occupants. In preparation, asbestos abatement is scheduled on August 2 – 9. During this time, specific areas of work will be sealed off and the flooring material will be removed. Air monitoring will be carried out to ensure that areas are safe for occupants to re-enter the building the next day. Once the floors are abated, the bare surface will be safe to walk over.

Asbestos removal is taken very seriously at UBC and abatement work is undertaken by pre-qualified asbestos abatement contractors and monitored according to WorkSafe BC regulations.

UBC Recognized at APPA Awards for Creating a Sustainable Campus

For a second time in six years, the University of British Columbia (UBC) was honoured with a Sustainability Award from APPA. The award recognizes efforts to embed sustainable policies and practices across the institution. We contribute to this achievement through our green fleet, our green custodial program, our herbicide free landscape, our waste diversion and composting efforts, our material and equipment selection and our attention to reducing waste and water on campus. Well done everyone. Read more on the sustain website.

Particular shout out to Pete McLoughlin who helped with the Wi-Fi proxy for occupancy during his time in Energy and Water Services which also won an innovation award at APPA.

Old Uniforms Donated to Habitat for Humanity

A big thank you to the Clerical Pool, BOLD and Waste Management for sorting through hundreds of pieces of clothing so that old non-branded clothing could be donated to Habitat for Humanity. We are happy to report that we donated approximately 500 pieces of clothing that others can use. All our old branded clothing was responsibly and securely recycled through a company called Debrand.

Special acknowledgement to Ellen Grande and April Wong for finding the best way to recycle our branded uniforms and for working with Habitat for Humanity to donate the non-branded clothing.
