Please don’t drive to the holiday lunch and dinner this Wednesday

Remember this week is the dayshift holiday lunch and the evening shift holiday dinner – both hosted at Life Sciences. We look forward to seeing the over 550 who have RSVP’s for this event but we don’t want to see all of your Building Ops service vehicles. Please be mindful of the limited designated Building Ops parking spots in the area and walk to your meal.

Policies and processes that just don’t make sense? Let your Head know

Back in the spring, staff who participated in the Leadership Development workshops identified that one point of frustration in Building Ops is unclear or inconsistently applied policies and procedures. We would like to help address that, and you can help.

In January the next installment of the Leadership Development training will include a session on supervising in a unionized environment. This course will help us look at the challenging role of unionized supervisor and develop some clear approaches to ensure our crew leaders are supported by management to get the work of the University done.

We need your help to identify the top 5 most problematic policies or procedures so that we can clarify, modify and/or develop better training for consistent application. This feedback will be incorporated in the January sessions.

Please add your thoughts to the comments sheet up at USB across from the tools crib or talk your head, April Wong or Kishani Gibbons by Friday, January 13.

Slow down for winter traffic in USB Yard

With the cold weather comes de-icing and snow removal activities that require the use of the salt stored at the North West corner of the USB Yard. Please be careful and patient if you are in this area.

Equipment operators: Be aware of pedestrian traffic.

Pedestrians: Use the West Mall sidewalk to enter USB. Don’t cut through the yard.

Drivers: Move slowly through the yard at the posted speed limit—15 km/h—and be patient while other work is going on in the yard.

If you wish to park in the University Endowment Lands, your must pay the parking meter

The University Endowment Lands (UEL) are not part of the UBC umbrella; parking in these areas is controlled by the UEL. If we park in these areas, we have to pay for parking in the same way that the public has to pay. All UBC vehicles in violation of the parking regulations will result in being towed. There are no exceptions.

Please refer to this map and be familiar with the UEL boundaries.

  • If you wish to park in the UEL, you must pay to park at the parking meters.
  • You will be towed if you are parked at an expired parking meter.
  • You will be towed if you are parked on a sidewalk in the UEL.
  • You will be towed if you are parked in a residential area without a UEL parking permit. A UBC parking permit does not allow you to park in the UEL.

This is particularly important for the neighbourhood south of University Boulevard and around University Marketplace because there are limited parking spaces for the residents of that area.
