Timecard Improvement Project: See Project Update Posters in USB Main Hallway

Earlier this year, staff, crew members, shop heads, and managers were asked to provide feedback, questions, and requests to give guidance on what we should focus on when it comes to improving time cards and our time tracking processes.

The feedback highlights that our time card process is outdated, predominantly manual, time-consuming, and difficult to use and manage. It’s fair to say we all agree that it’s time for a change.

Here’s a summary of the top requests:

With your feedback, this project will improve our current timekeeping processes in ways that address some of the most pressing issues as well as the above requests.

What’s happening next?

  • We’ve created posters that demonstrate what problems the Timecard Improvement Project will correct, and how it can address the top requests. They’ll be posted on the main floor of USB, near the Wellness Centre. Come check them out when you have a chance.
  • In the coming weeks, Project Team members will also come to crew talks to share further insights on the feedback and requests gathered.
  • Soon, questions and their answers will be posted in an online FAQ at: ubc.ca/staff/projects-programs

Nesting Seagull on Angus Office Tower – Beware and Stay Clear

A nesting pair of seagulls have fledglings on the roof of the Angus office tower. They are displaying extremely aggressive behavior protecting the nest.

Stay clear of this area. If you are required to be on the roof, work with a partner and wear a hardhat, eye protection and long sleeves. Report your entry and departure to your Head. Please do not “encourage” them out of your work area as seagulls are on the protected species list.

Contact FM Rob MacDonald if you have any questions.

Floors Are Waxed and Ready To Shine for Students

Next time you walk through one of our many campus buildings (including QMI, Copp, and SPPH pictured below) you may need to keep your sunglasses on—these floors are shiny!

Every year, from May to August when the campus is less busy, Custodial polishes and waxes the floors for students and staff to enjoy when they return from summer vacation. This also helps us maintain the floors in the long run.

Do you know what needs to be done so we can have shiny floors? Let’s see…

  1. Furniture and equipment need to be removed off the floor
  2. Dusting needs to be done for the whole area
  3. Floor needs to be swept, vacuumed and mopped
  4. Floor needs to be stripped or scrubbed
  5. 3-5 layers of wax need to be laid and dried for 10-12 hours
  6. Floor needs to be burnished and vacuumed again
  7. Voila! Shiny floors!

A big thank you to the custodial team!
