REMINDER TO ALL DRIVERS TO EXERCISE CAUTION AND ABIDE BY PARKING RULES WHILE OPERATING BUILDING OPERATIONS VEHICLES THROUGHOUT CAMPUS

Driving throughout campus:

While not everyone is returning to campus this term, it is important that we consider that we still have increased traffic and pedestrian movement on campus. As per Building Operations policy, all drivers are responsible for the following when driving vehicles throughout the campus to complete our work:

  • When moving through the public realm, make sure you travel at a reduced and safe speed which is appropriate for the pedestrian and cyclist movements in the area.
  • Ensure you raise all bollards that are dropped to access the public realm area directly after you enter so as to maintain the safety of the people within the area by avoiding unauthorised access to the public realm.

We need to be diligent in making sure that all employees and campus users are safe and incident free.  We can do this by following safe driving procedures, maintaining focus while driving and eliminating distractions as we move through the campus using Building Operations vehicles and equipment.

Parking:

For all UBC Fleet vehicles use and parking on campus during working hours including the shared electric vehicles:

  1. UEL Village parking is pay parking regardless of your business – vehicles will be towed if you are parked in an expired meter, in a UEL permit parking only, or on the sidewalk or boulevard.
  2. UEL Acadia Road Parking requires permission from the UEL to do so and may require a street use permit if the project is lengthy – we must NOT park our vehicles at all unless we have given notice and applied for a street use permit which can be processed through our Municipal department.
  3. Parking in disabled spaces, crosswalks, fire lanes, and all restricted areas is not permitted.  All campus parking restrictions must be adhered to unless there is an emergency to manage that requires the use of the vehicle in response to that emergency.  UBC vehicles do not have free reign on campus and we will be towed or ticketed for parking in restricted areas.
  4.  All employees who operate fleet vehicles are required to avoid vehicles being towed or ticketed.  If the vehicle receives a ticket or is towed, this cost is at the OPERATOR’s expense and the driver will be required to pay.

PLAQUE PRESENTATION TO SANTA ONO

In celebration of Professor Santa Ono’s reappointment as UBC President and Vice-Chancellor, Building Operations presented President Ono a beautiful plaque.

On the plaque is a quote from famous western novelist Louis L‘Amour which reads,

“Knowledge was not meant to be locked behind doors. It breathes best In the open air where all can inhale its essence.”

The quote is appropriate to go with the attached door hardware which was rescued from the metal recycling bin (previously salvaged from the Earth Science renewal in 2011).

Our Sign Shop knew just what was needed to restore its beauty and collaborated with the Carpentry shop in creating the beautiful plaque pictured.

The symbolism here is UBC offers faculty, students and staff the ability to open doors to knowledge in an inclusive and collaborative way.

In that regard, UBC Building Operations will continue to support those efforts.

Thanks to all those who participated, Well Done Team!

EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS: APARTMENTS, CONDOS AND TOWNHOUSES

Get to know your neighbors in order to build a better preparedness plan

Almost half of British Columbians live in a multi-family housing complex such an apartment, condo or townhouse. Getting to know your neighbors is an important part of your emergency preparedness plan. By pooling your skills and resources, you are ensuring a better preparedness level.
