REPORT ANY PHISHING E-MAIL MESSAGES RECEIVED TO SECURITY@UBC.CA

UBC Cybersecurity has received reports of sextortion phishing messages being received at UBC this past weekend. The message includes a copy of an old username/email address combined with an old password, in order to make it more believable that the criminal actually has personal information about the victim. The credential information was obtained from a database with stolen passwords from other breaches (e.g. Target, LinkedIn, etc.) and the criminal is now using that information to create more credible phishing messages in an attempt to extort victims out of Bitcoin.

Please share the following instructions in the event that there may be other UBC targets, specifically in your department.

If you receive this email:

  • Do not open the attachment – see the sample below and a screenshot is available at hxxps: //bulletins.it.ubc.ca/archives/36319
  • Forward the original email as an attachment to security@ubc.ca,
  • If the password is used on any account, change it immediately, and watch for suspicious activity on that account
  • Delete the email
  • And, DO NOT follow the instructions in the email; if you have already responded to the criminal in some way, please let security@ubc.ca know that as well.

 Sample:

This message contains encrypted attachments that could not be verified as virus free. Open only if you were expecting this message.

Pass word: 4534

For more information on phishing messages, please visit the UBC Privacy Matters website.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.
