KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR MOTORCYLES–MOTORCYCLE SAFETY IS EVERYONE’S RESPONSIBILITY

Matthew Harraway on a Honda RC51

Warmer spring weather signals the start of the motorcycle season where motorcyclists are eager to get back on the roads and trails. Everyone plays an important role in motorcycle safety. Under the helmet, motorcyclists are mothers, fathers, children and friends. Help spread the word and encourage others to be aware of motorcycles on the road. Increased visibility and awareness will improve the chance of motorcyclists being seen on the roads and trails. Visibility is the key!

SHEET METAL SHOP ROCKS

The mechanical room access doors on the on the southeast corner of the Pharmacy building have been binding against each other for some years. It gets worse when the sun hits the black glass and aluminum construction. The continuous hinge style are not adjustable. Sergio Ferino from the Sheet Metal Shop came out and did some grinding magic on the doors and finished it off with some similar paint. Now, the doors open easily! Thanks Serge.

CHANGE LEADS US TO A NEW BEGINNING….HERE’S A REMINDER ON GOING THROUGH CHANGE

Our department has moved into a period of change, with many changes in leadership, including our managing director. We are embarking on multiple projects that will come with more changes for Building Ops. The many achievements of our past have brought us to where we are now, in a space primed to move forward.

With change comes the loss of what is being left behind.

To help you understand the stages of change, William Bridges’ Transition Model explains there are 3 main stages; Endings, Neutral Zone and New Beginnings.

Endings

Transition starts with an ending. It’s important to appreciate that we will feel a sense of loss for what we’re losing, be it PeopleSoft, or the zone model as we know it.

Neutral Zone

The second step comes after letting go: the neutral zone. This is the core of the transition process, between the old identity and the new identity. New processes come in this space, and a lot of learning. It can be uncomfortable and it’s important to acknowledge that it’s normal to feel that sense of discomfort. It will get better!

New Beginnings

Beginnings involve new understandings, new values and attitudes.

So as each of us moves through change, be aware of the stages you may naturally feel. Know that it’s normal to go through this and work with those leading the change to move through effectively.

PROVIDE FEEDBACK ON CURRENT INFORMATION SECURITY STANDARDS BY APRIL 6

A message from Andrew Szeri, Provost and Vice-President, Academic and Jennifer Burns, Associate Vice-President, Information Technology, Chief Information Officer

To ensure that UBC’s confidential data and information systems are safe from a data breach, the university has Information Security Standards that govern the use and protection of university data and computing resources. As required by Policy #104, Acceptable Use and Security of UBC Electronic Information and Systems, all faculty and staff are responsible and accountable for following these standards.

These Information Security Standards are subject to periodic reviews to adapt to changing expectations and risks. The next review cycle begins this year.

Faculty and staff are invited to provide feedback on the current Information Security Standards by April 6, 2018. Feedback can be provided using the online form or by sending an email to privacy.matters@ubc.ca.

Find the current information security standards.

All feedback will be forwarded to the review team made up of staff and faculty members for analysis. The team will then publish draft amendments to the standards for comment by the campus community. The team will then make final amendments and forward them to the Chief Information Officer for approval.

All are encouraged to participate in this important process and your input is greatly appreciated.
