WHAT ARE YOU DOING FOR SAFETY? PERFORM PRE-JOB PLANNING

Planning for success ensures job safety

One of our most powerful safety tools is pre-work planning. Pre-work planning is a safety assessment at the start of a shift or before beginning any work. Research has shown that employing pre-work planning throughout a job process, and reassessing as work progresses, yields better safety performance.

The goal is to have everyone involved in an interactive, collaborative process that provides an opportunity for feedback. The crew gathers to identify, document, and control potential hazards and associated risks before the work gets underway. By continuously improving our ability to plan we will continue to reduce potential accident frequency and severity.

Successful pre-work planning has these five key elements:

  1. Define the scope of work
  2. Analyze the hazards
  3. Develop and implement hazard controls
  4. Perform work within hazard control
  5. Provide feedback and continuous improvement

For further information contact your supervisor.

EMERGENCY TRAINING EXERCISE ON JUNE 19TH 9:00AM – 1:00PM

Risk Management Services’ Emergency Management Department is continuing to build our culture of preparedness and emergency management capabilities by conducting a full-scale simulation exercise on Tuesday, June 19.

As part of this exercise the University’s Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) will be activated to practice a coordinated response to a major event on campus. Our department plays a significant role in the EOC and we are excited to be part of this exercise so we can learn and grow from this experience.

Building Operations will use this exercise to activate our Department Operations Centre (DOC) to conduct a drill that will be run in parallel to the full-scale exercise. We recognize that we need to better prepared and equipped to deal with a significant emergency and this is one of the steps in getting there.

WORKING SAFELY AFTER HOURS PROGRAM NOW LIVE!

The Working Safely After Hours program went live with Trades staff on June 4th. This is a program that was developed after a need was discovered for more supervision and planning on after hours jobs.

What does this mean for trade jobs that are scheduled for after hours?

  1. Jobs involving 3 or more people will require supervision from a Head, Subhead, Project Coordinator or a Site Supervisor
  2. A level 2 hazard assessment must be completed as part of job planning
  3. A tailboard meeting must be conducted before work starts with all staff on the job

The program package was sent out via email to all trades staff on the go live date. We will be reviewing the program every 6 months and making changes where needed based on feedback from staff.

Thank you and be SAFE!

DEAN OF SCIENCE THANKS BUILDING OPERATIONS FOR EXCELLENT WORK AND CUSTOMER SERVICE

Simon Peacock is completing his service as Dean of Science on June 30 after 12 years in the role. He has been a terrific leader on campus and a great partner to us over the years on facilities related issues. In his departing speech to a gathering of Deans and senior administrators he specifically thanked the custodians working in Science buildings for their great work and friendly service. He also pointed out the fantastic work that Building Operations does in quickly and effectively responding to crisis issues in campus buildings.

Science has had a few minor fire and explosion incidents in labs over the years that have resulted in significant flooding from sprinkler water. He marveled at how fast our crews respond, often in the overnight hours, to secure the situation and clean up the mess so classes and research work can carry on seamlessly the next day.

This shows the dedication and commitment of Building Operations in making spaces work better for the University. Thank you all.

PROJECT SERVICES HOSTS THANK YOU EVENT

Project Services expressed their appreciation for the support Building Ops’ staff provide in their project. When some projects become unpredictable and are faced with challenging situations, Project Services have counted on Building Ops to provide support. To show their appreciation, they hosted coffee and treats on May 30th.

Thank you to the Project Services for the treats. And thank you to you all who helped make our teams work for the betterment of the university.
