What Are We Doing for Safety? Reduce the Hazards of Backing

Backing can almost always be eliminated or greatly reduced. Whenever possible, attempt to eliminate the need to backup when planning. Should the need arise, be sure to utilize the available and appropriate safeguards to prevent an incident from occurring.

Best Practices and Safeguards to Mitigate the Hazards of Backing

  • The single best way to prevent backing-related incidents is to eliminate backing as much as possible. Some work areas and tasks can be setup in such a way that backing up is not necessary. Pre-planning of movements is another way to eliminate unnecessary backing.
  • Look for pull through parking before choosing to park where your first move is backing up. Always try to position yourself so that you can easily pull forward out of a parking spot.
  • If you need to back up after being in a fixed position, complete a walk around of your vehicle. This allows you to be aware of what is in your blind spots prior to making a move.
  • Some vehicles and equipment are equipped with backup cameras to assist with backing up. Where appropriate, the installation of backup cameras on equipment and vehicles may be beneficial upon review.
  • Use a spotter. If backing is necessary and there are hazards such as other ground personnel or fixed objects in the area then a spotter should be used. Always consider the additional hazards created when a spotter is used in a work area with moving equipment or vehicles.
  • Mark fixed objects (i.e. pylon) so they are more visible to those operating a motor vehicle or heavy equipment in a work area.
  • Place protective barricades to protect critical or expensive equipment from struck-by incidents.

Get To Know the Team Members on Centralized Maintenance Management System (CMMS)

The Centralized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) is our pivotal system that will assist in bridging some of our maintenance gaps like planning; reporting on work status and will be a repository for asset information. To move forward, we will need a well-rounded team to help us. The CMMS team has been identified with representatives from each group to ensure a balanced perspective. Thank you to everyone who put their names forward. If you have a suggestion or want to provide feedback, find one of the team members. Led by Hayley MacDonald, they are:

Adam Rosenthal

Evan Colville

Jeff Morningstar

Lindsay Forsyth

Mike Devolin

Pam Wasylyshen

Peter Mcloughlin

Shahid Hussain

Tamas Weidner

Wende Kinch

With the initial proposal completed, the next step will be to agree on requirements of the new system.

Use New Zone Customer Labour Numbers instead of Building Standing Work Order (BOW) starting April 1st

If you work in the zone and provide labour to customers under the zone model, your help is needed! As part of the zone review project, we’re trying to understand the type of effort that we’re putting into our buildings. Right now, all the time spent on customer jobs in the zone is charged to the building standing numbers, so we can’t tell overall how much time we’re spending doing maintenance in those buildings.

We have created 8 new standing work order numbers, 1 for each zone. These are customer labour standing work orders, and zone staff should use these numbers if they are spending time on customer jobs in the zone, under the zone model. These numbers will go live April 1st.

Deb Capps is hosting 3 open houses for all Building Operations staff who work on the zone model, or want to learn more about how this initiative will inform the overall zone review strategy.

Drop in during these session to chat with Deb.
