LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT TRAINING ENTERING PHASE 2 THIS OCTOBER

In the May 26, 2016 issue of our newsletter, we said that we were going to engage our heads, subheads, managers, FMs, PCs and superintendents through a Leadership Development Program. The last session of Phase 1, Leading Change, was held last June 8th.  As promised in our June 20, 2017issue, we are now entering Phase 2 this October with “Communicating Effectively”. All new supervisors are required to take these courses and all other Building Ops employees are welcome to join in the session too. Compressed refreshers will also be offered to folks who took courses last year. Learn more during the upcoming town halls and contact April Wong by October 6th to register. RECURRING WATER INGRESS PROBLEM IN HENNINGS FIXED

Kudos to plumbers Clayton McMullen with Bruno Dettling and Matt Shew who, together, were able to diagnose and come up with a plan to address a recurring water ingress issue related to a failure of the rooftop drainage system that was plugged solid with mud and debris. There were two failures in this scenario, a roofing failure on a lower roof and a hidden failure of a blocked rooftop drain as it leaves the building below the ground on the north side of Hennings. Once the plan was conceived, the Construction Office (Dave Wenzel) coordinated the work of the hard and soft landscape, roofer, carpenters, and plumbers. We now have an accessible clean-out that can be utilized for inspection and clearing the line should it be required. This in turn will extend the life of the infrastructure and minimize the disruption to the occupants.

2017 STAFF EXCELLENCE AWARDS–CALL FOR COMMITTEE MEMBERS

Our Staff Excellence Awards are a great way to recognize colleagues that demonstrate excellence at work in areas of leadership, innovation, customer service, health, wellness and safety, teamwork, and inspiration (aka the Kim Nulty Award).

We will soon be opening the nomination process for our 2017 Staff Excellence Awards and would like to get the committee together ASAP.

If you would like to be part of the committee that evaluates the nominations and selects the best of the best in each award category, please let your Head or Manager know on or before Tuesday, October 3rd 2017.

If you are wondering what your commitment would be as a committee member, here is what’s involved:

  1. Participate in a 15-20 minute pre-meeting to understand the goals and selection process
  2. Canvass nominations in your shop or any other shop for employees that do outstanding work
  3. Review the list of nominations prior to the awards selection meeting
  4. Attend and participate in the selection process

This is a great opportunity to have a voice in the selection process as well as recognition for stepping up and helping to make a difference. Looking forward to hearing from you!

UBC PROPERTIES TRUST WORKING WITH US TO IMPROVE BUILDING HANDOVER PROCESS

We would like to highlight that UBCPT now have a dedicated resource to improve the delivery of the “O&M Manuals and Record Drawings” when handing over a New Building.

This is a great help to Building Operations on tracking the status of all these critical items.

As this was recognized as a gap in the process from the past, we just wanted to acknowledge how UBCPT have begun to address this issue in a proactive manner, addressing the needs of the University. Thanks UBC Properties!

KIDS TO WORK DAY IS NOVEMBER 1, 2017

Building Operations, Energy & Services, Student Housing & Hospitality Services, and UBC Community Services are encouraging all parents with children in Grade 9 to bring them to work for the day on November 1, 2017.

Due to the nature of the work done in the university, and the potential safety hazards involved, a guided day of activities (including lunch) will be planned for students who are unable to spend the day on the job with their parent. Parents are also invited to the lunch.

Registration closes on October 20, 2017.  For more details or to register, please contact Caroline Soriano at 604-822-4178.

We are also seeking volunteers for the event. Please contact Caroline Soriano if you would like to be a part of the program.

UBC COMMUNITY INPUT BEGINS FOR THE NEW STADIUM NEIGHBOURHOOD

On Thursday September 28, we will be launching a campus-wide public consultation to begin planning UBC’s next neighbourhood in the area around Thunderbird Stadium. Input is sought from the campus community on how the university can create a vibrant new neighbourhood that supports UBC’s academic mission, advances in sustainability and connects our facilities, destinations and existing neighourhoods.

This will be the first of a multi-phase consultation and technical process over the next 18 months to help create a plan for the new neighbourhood. The plan will provide direction for parks and open spaces, services and amenities, types of housing, transportation connections, building types, and the location of a rebuilt Thunderbird Stadium.

Share your ideas and insights to help guide planning decisions, and encourage your colleagues, classmates and neighbours to do the same. Take the online survey from September 28 – October 22.  Visit planning.ubc.ca/stadium. More information will be available online when consultation begins on September 28 at planning.ubc.ca/stadium. Have your say.
