HEx Replacement Underway

Following the reviews by external experts the heat exchangers in many buildings on campus are being replaced. Forestry was completed last week and the contractor is now moving onto Place Vanier buildings. Project Services is leading the replacement project with technical input from several members of the Building Operations team. It is our expectation that all of the required replacements will be completed in the next few months, at which point we can cease the rigorous inspection program that has been in place since the first failure last winter. Thanks to the OEs, Steam and Plumbing crews who have been instrumental in keeping the district heated domestic water feeds operational for our buildings.

Mini-noise window at LSC Sept 30 – Oct 2

Energy and Water requires a three day window to remove a failed electrical transformer from the B2 level of LSC. Animal Care Services appreciated the risk to the building’s overall electrical distribution and granted a 3 day window from September 30th (Saturday) to end of day October 2nd (Monday). Building Operations and Project Services are encouraged to leverage this opportunity to take care of outstanding noisy or disruptive work at Life Sciences Centre prior to the next scheduled noise window in January 2018.

Always Return Bollard to the Upright Position

To help keep our campus safe and free of unwanted vehicles in the public realm please be sure to lift the bollard after you have gained access – even if you will only be there for a few minutes. Keeping unwanted vehicles out of the public realm is critically important.

New Labourers for BOLT team to support Mech/Elec Room Clean-Up Efforts

Many of our mechanical rooms are in dire need of a good clean up and are posing a safety hazard for those that work in them. Recognizing that it is difficult to now “catch up” on all of the clean-up required, and seeing how in demand our existing BOLD team is, the Trades group has committed to funding 2 additional temporary labourer resources to help with this work. Once we get folks on board, we will need to tap into everyone’s knowledge to help prioritize those rooms that pose the biggest safety risk.

After clean-up is complete comes the hard part – to keep them clean. Once mechanical rooms are back on track and looking the way they should look, it will be really important that we all work together and show pride in the work we do and keep the rooms looking good so that you have a safer place to work. We will develop a program for this and communicate further details in the coming months.

Broken Skylight Glass at Forest Sciences Replaced

Glazier Dan Myers, with the help of carpenters Erik Feuchuk and Ron Wessa, along with labourers Rick Mitchell, Roozbeh Kianpour and Michael Nichols all came together under the coordination efforts of Paint shop head Kevin Morris, to install a very large and heavy piece of Forest Sciences skylight glass that broke earlier this summer. The repair involved a tricky crane lift and install which the crew managed to pull off without a hitch, even though they were under time pressure to get it done before a parade was set to take place on Main Mall at 1pm on Saturday afternoon.
