UBC Homecoming is September 16th. Let’s make this campus shine.

Floods and a power outage created a busy few days for our crews

This past week has been exceptionally busy for our operations crews who have attended not one, but two major floods and a feeder outage.  Thank yous to all who attended each incident and helped return the systems and spaces to proper working order.  We have an understanding of the root cause of the IRC flood and the feeder outage but are still exploring the nature of the Bio Science West flood.

Vehicle Washing Reminder

Other than specific equipment such as mowers and attachments, staff looking to wash UBC vehicles should do so at the vehicle washing pad at the MRF site at South Campus and not the USB Garage.

Timecard Improvement Update: UBC IT to lend their support to Building Operations after positively reacting to our project

Our Time Card Improvement project underwent a review with UBC IT and they saw the potential for this to improve time reporting for many departments across campus.  They also saw the need to support us in our project to make sure it’s a success.

Because of this, UBC IT is looking to assist us with the Timecard Improvement Project by:

  • Providing technical resources to help us integrate our solution with key IT infrastructure, like CWL for logging in, and PeopleSoft Work Orders.
  • Making sure our solution can effectively integrate with the enterprise software projects currently in development to upgrade/replace the finance and HR for all of UBC.

What does this mean for us? IT has asked us to allow them 3 months to help us provide the best solution to our current paper timecard issues. Because of this, we’ll be putting development of the solution on hold while we wait for IT to complete their work.

In late Q4 2017/early 2018, we’ll be re-launching the project with our partners in IT and start planning implementation.

Privacy Matters Training a Must for All Computer Users

Information sharing is so common today that it is understandable for people to become complacent about privacy and information security. Yet, everyone has the right to expect their personal information to remain safe and secure. Here at UBC, nearly every faculty and staff member have access to confidential information. As the disclosure or loss of this information could be very harmful, it’s important for you to know how to protect it.

To understand the fundamental elements of privacy and information security, every UBC faculty and staff member who uses a ubc.ca email address needs to take the Privacy Matters on-line training.

Those who have taken the short online training already have found it very informative and totally applicable to your home computer security too.

Did you know that at UBC:

  • 1,070,454 spam messages are blocked on average every month
  • 6,310 users forgot their CWL password
  • 107 CWL accounts were compromised in 2015
  • 71 laptops were reported stolen 2015
